James was born November 17, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, and was raised by his great uncle and aunt John and Kathryn Hovlivy. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1957. Jim worked at Barnard Leas, Square D and for many years at Westside Sewing. Jim was united in marriage to Janice Maureen Benish on January 14, 1967 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. He enjoyed working with wood and metals, playing the guitar and harmonica, photography and activities outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents William E. and Nellie (VanCura) Howell, his great uncle and aunt John and Kathryn Hovlivy.
