Maynard "Benny" Burdette Benner was born May 22, 1922, at Primghar, Iowa, the son of Harry and Estella (Stonesifer) Benner. He was baptized on April 17, 1927. He attended school at Primghar, Paullina, and graduated from Sanborn High School in 1939. During W.W. II he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country on the seas of the North Atlantic. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his work as a Radar Operator First Class.

While in the military, he was united in marriage to Leota "Chris" Christopher on August 25, 1944 at Jamestown, Rhode Island. After receiving his honorable discharge from the Navy, they moved to Sanborn, Iowa. While living here he was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for 10 years, until 1958 when he purchased the Standard Station in Sanborn. In 1965 they sold the station and moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked as an electrician and sheet metal worker. Benny and Chris retired in 1982 and returned to Sanborn.

In 1988 he suffered a heart attack which limited his activities and for the past three years had been in declining health. He died at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon on April 15, 1997, after a three week illness, at the age of 74 years, 10 months, and 23 days.

He enjoyed being a member and playing golf at the Sanborn Country Club. He was also a 50 year member of the American Legion and a long-time member of Saint John's Lutheran Church in Sanborn. IN their free time, Benny and Chris enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Chris, of Sanborn, two sons, Michael and Joseph, five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers: Harry Benner of Las Vegas, Nevada; Ted Benner of Kit Carson, Colorado, Charles Benner of Concord, California, Jim Benner of Lincoln, California; and two sisters: Ethelyn Richards of Westwood, California and Betty Casler of Concord, California.
