MARY BALCH ENLOE Widow of Amos P. Balch and second wife of Asahel Enloe

Mary Enloe whose maiden name was Sawyer, was born in Logan County., Kentucky, 9 Nov 1801, and when quite young, was converted and united with the Presbyterian Church.

She was married in Kentucky to Amos P. Balch in April, 1826. They moved to Indiana Kay 1826 [sic] and then to Shelby Co., II. in 1836. They came to Bond Co. in March 1842.

9 children were born, four sons and five daughters. Mr. Balch died 27 Aug 1846 and is buried in Union Grove Cemetery about 5 miles north of Greenville, Illinois. Mary then married Asahel Enloe, 15 Aug 1848. He died of the "coughing disease".

Mary's two eldest sons, Monroe and Sylvester Balch, served on the Union side in the Civil War. Monroe died in the war at Moscow, Tenn. and Sylvester returned and died 1 Jan 1873.

Her oldest daughter, Mrs. Jane Curlee, lived near Mountain Home, Ark. Another daughter, Mrs. Caroline Roe, lived in Filmore, Ill.; Mrs. Rachel Smith and Mrs. Charlotte Sapp lived in Greenville. Mary had a sister, Mrs. Ann (R.H. or J.) Gwyn of Elm Point Community.

According to the 1850 Census of Bond County, Illinois, the following children by the name of Balch were living with Asahel and Mary Enloe: Sylvester N., 21, born in Indiana; Eliza J., 18 IN; John S., 17 IN; Felise M., 15 IN; Maria L., 12 born in Illinois; Vashti R., 11 IL; Caroline M., 8 IL ; and Charlotte M., 6 IL.

Mary stumbled and fell and suffered 10 months. She died 4 June 1892 and is buried at Union Grove Cemetery beside Mr. Balch.
Mary and Asahel had no children.

The Kaskaskia Chapter, U.S. Daughters of 1812, have placed a marker at the grave of Amos P. Balch in Old Union Cemetery, Bond County, Illinois. A daughter was Mrs. Henry Sapp of Greenville.

Feb. 1842, Amos P. Balch had a wife Sarah, according to the early Greenville Presbyterian Church records and left the church 9 Jan 1845.
