In 1900, Daniel was appointed Marshall of Livermore and served Livermore for 30 years as law officer, town clerk and Chief of Police. After his retirement he continued to help out the town in many ways. He was an authority on the history of the valley. Daniel had splendid abilities as a police officer.
Quoting an obituary, "Not a fraction of what he did in straightening out family troubles, in extending a guiding hand to boys who needed just this help and other similar deed will ever be known to any except those he befriended and often they did not think at the time that he was their friend or acting for their interests but realized later that his judgement was best."
