She was born in Bloomfield, Connecticut on August 7, 1926 as a daughter of the late Lawrence and Margaret D. LeHane.
Kathleen attended Bloomfield schools and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1944. Following several years of secretarial work with the Travelers Insurance Company, she attended American Airlines Stewardess Training and after graduation was based in New York City as a flight attendant.
She married James Rafferty in 1952 in Hartford, Connecticut. Kathleen and James spent most of their married life of 61 years in South Windsor and enjoyed an active part in town and Church of St. Margaret Mary activities. Kay was a founding member and the first President of the church's Ladies Guild, was active with the South Windsor library as a volunteer and prepared scrapbooks of library events as Historian. She enjoyed gardening, designing flower arrangements and creating other crafts.
She leaves her sons and their families James and Lucinda Rafferty of Norfolk, Massachusetts, Bruce and Cheryl Rafferty of Ronkonkoma, New York, Mark Rafferty of Plainville, Kathi Rafferty of Bristol and Richard and Stephanie "Steve" Rafferty of Breckinridge, Colorado. She also leaves seven beloved grandchildren: Erin Rafferty Palian and her husband Charles Palian of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, Bruce J. Rafferty and his wife Colleen Rafferty of Centereach, New York, Ryan and Connor Rafferty of Bristol, Jason Rafferty of Asheville, North Carolina, Devin Rafferty of Norfolk, Massachusetts and Robert Rafferty of Ronkonkoma. She also cherished her four great-grandchildren, Emma and Elise Palian, and Brendan and Ryan Rafferty.
She was pre-deceased by her sisters Virginia, Margaret and Carol, and her brothers Robert and Edward.
She leaves her sister Nora and husband Joe Willis of Ellington and sister-in-laws Anne LeHane of Rhinebeck, New York and Marilyn LeHane of Keene, New Hampshire. She also leaves her sister-in-law Rosalie Welch, brother-in-law John Rafferty and his wife Olga, and the children of those families. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins. She cared deeply for her family and friends.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, January 18th from 3-6PM at Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. On Monday, January 19th, visiting hours will be held from 10-11AM, followed by a funeral service at 11AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Manchester.
