Thurston E. Dean, M.D., of Midland, died Sunday, April 30, 2006.
Dr. Dean was born January 26, 1929, in Madisonville, Texas, where he graduated salutatorian of his high school in 1946. After completing his undergraduate studies, Dr. Dean obtained his medical degree in 1953 from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, being elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. His orthopedic training was interrupted by two years of service in the U.S. Air Force in Biloxi, Mississippi, being honorably discharged with the rank of captain. After completing his residency, Dr. Dean moved to Midland in 1960 and opened his orthopedic practice. He received numerous honors associated with an exceptional medical career, numbering among his most cherished was the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas High School Coaches Association for his contributions to high school athletics.
Dr. Dean was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Jean.
Surviving are his wife of 13 years, Mary; his six children, Dr. Ted Dean and his wife Rita, Dr. Paul Dean and his wife Gayle, Dr. John Dean and his wife Deborah, Kathleen Williams and her husband Andy, Dr. Brad Dean and his wife Shan, and Christopher Dean and his wife Holley; step-daughters, Lynn Hall and her husband Lynn, and Karen Clifton and her husband Tom; seventeen grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Tuesday, May 2, 2006 between the hours of 6:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M.
A celebration of Dr. Dean's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 3, 2006 at First Baptist Church of Midland. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bill Cannon, Carl Cannon, Joe Lloyd Cannon, Pete Janssen, Jim Rogers and Alan Jones, M.D. Honorary pallbearers are John Foster, M.D., Gregory Bartha, M.D., Charlie Younger, M.D., Tom Green, D.V.M., Donnie Boykin and Larry Neyland.
