Howard Wesley Cherry Sr., 70, publisher of the Gunnison Valley News and the Salina Sun, died Wednesday at 9 p.m. of a heart attack. He had been ill four weeks.
In the newspaper business since he was 15 years old, Mr. Cherry had published the News since 1919 and the Sun since 1924. He was born in Tioga, Ill., September 28, 1870, a son of Alfred N. and Mary E. Banks Cherry. Mr. Cherry moved to Salt Lake City in 1880, later working and residing in Nevada, Arizona and California before returning to Utah in 1917. He then published weekly newspapers in Moab and Marysvale before taking the Gunnison paper. He married Orsa Hurd in Globe, Ariz., June 16, 1913.
Surviving are his widow and a son, Howard Wesley Cherry, Jr., both of Salina; a stepson, Roger Bolton of Palo Alto, Cal.; two brothers, J. W. Cherry of Chandler, Ariz., and Ernest Cherry of Butte, Mont., and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Vorse of Salt Lake City, Mrs. Blanche Browne of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Frank Carmean of Boise, Idaho.
