Staff Sgt. Mark A. Wall of Alden, Iowa was born the fourth child of Arthur Middleton Wall and Helen Jean DeWitt Wall in Iowa Falls, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lee Center United Methodist Church of rural Alden and was reared on the family farm near Alden, graduating in 1997 from Alden Community High School. He participated in basketball, football, track, chorus, and band. He was a Boy Scout attaining the rank of Eagle Scout in March of 1997. He also participated in 4-H livestock, garden, and photography projects, and FFA leadership and business projects. He joined the Iowa Falls Unit, Co. C/ 1--133rd Infantry, of the Iowa National Guard in February 1997, attending Basic Training and Infantry AIT at Fort Benning, GA. He attended classes at Ellsworth Community College in Ag Business and worked as an electrician's helper until he joined the active duty Army in May of 2000. He was deployed to Iraq in August of 2005 and served in a Stryker unit near Mosul at FOB Courage. Mark held a passion for the outdoors especially that in Alaska. He loved prospecting for gold, hiking, fishing, and skiing. He is a member and past treasurer of the Eagles Lodge 1037, Moose Lodge, and American Legion all in Fairbanks, AK. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Frances Wall, Robert and Jean DeWitt. He suffered a heart attack in the dining room at his unit's base in Mosul, Iraq at age 27.
