R&B Musician. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, he was the lead singer of the musical group, The Tams. They formed in Atlanta in 1959, with Floyd Ashton, Horace Key, Charles Pope, Robert Smith, and Pope. Noted for their "beach" music, they were among one of the more popular up-tempo soul groups of the 1960s. The Tams released there first single, 'Untie Me,' in 1962, while recording for the Arlen Record Label. The song went to number 12 on the R&B charts and number 11 on the Pop charts. In 1963, the group signed with the ABC-Paramount Records, and remained there until 1968. That same year they also released there biggest hit, "What Kind Of Fool (Do You Think I Am)" followed by "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy" in 1968. Following a few more years of success, The Tams called it quits in 1973. Other songs by the group include "Numbers", "Flesh And Bone", "Operator", "Laugh At The World", "Autumn Leaves", "Amen", "People Get Ready", "Shelter", "You Lied To Your Daddy", and "Weep Little Girl". Pope, who also served as a Seaman in the United States Navy, passed away in Decatur, Georgia, at the age of 62.
