Civil War service, credited to Huntington VT, age 21: “enl 12/16/63, m/i 12/24/63, Pvt, Co. A, 7th VT INF, m/o 8/6/64”
A 1908 article about the eight sons of Lawrence who entered the Civil War states:
“Alpheus M. and Alfred S. are twins, 62 years old. Alpheus M. resides at Holyoke, Mass., and is a veterinary surgeon. He enlisted in the Seventh Vermont, and served about two years in the Department of the Gulf, being discharged for disability.”
Two sons buried in Stockbridge are engraved on stone: Merrill M. 1905-1906 and Howard E., b. & d. 1907. Alpheus' wife is named Anna M. when she applied for a widow's pension (filed from NJ)
