It is said that there are [or were] markers for David Upton [? - 1845] in both the main cemetery and the Chandlers Cove Cemetery. Elizabeth Hamilton [1713 - 1772] and John Hamilton [1709 - 1767] are among others from Chebeague and surrounding islands believed to be buried in the Chandlers Cove Cemetery.

John and Betty (Chandler) Hamilton were residents of North Yarmouth, Maine, as early as the 28 Sept. 1733 when their son John [Junior] was born, there is no previous record of them. Their son Ambrose [our direct descendent] was born July 21, 1735 and their son (Rowland) or Roland were baptized in the First Church. One such tradition is that three brothers John, Ambrose, and Rowland came to this country from Scotland. But John, Ambrose, and Rowland were born in North Yarmouth, Maine. The only way the tradition can be true is that the father of John, Ambrose and Rowland had brothers Ambrose and Rowland of whom there is now no record. Betty and John adopted a girl, Margaret O'Brion, baptised 23 May 1742.

A family tradition states that Betty was "Betsey Franzy from Ganzy" (from the Island Guernsey) but according to the church record she was either born a Chandler or was first married to a Chandler.

The second suggestion is made because she and John only had three children at a time when large families were the rule. She has not been placed in any of the numerous Chandler families of this time. It is said that after her mother's death, her father married a servant girl which provoked her so much that she left home and came to this country. She was well-to-do and parts of her elaborately embroidered wedding dress were until recently at least, in the possession of members of the family on Chebeague Island, Maine.

Another form of the tradition has been given by James C. Hamilton who says that his uncle Reuban Hill told him that John Hamilton eloped to America with Betsey. She was called a "Franzy" a name formerly given to French girls who had been sent to Louisiana to marry Spanish officers, so no one knows for sure unless we can find their roots over in Scotland which I imagine someone will one day.

John owned a 100 acre lot, #22 Range A in the Northeast 100-Acre division of North Yarmouth, Maine, which he sold to Job Cole in 1760 when he may have gone to live with his second son, Ambrose on Chebeague Island. John died on Chebeague Island 1767. Betty died on Chebeague 1772.

John and Betty's other sons Rowland lived on Cousin Island and John stayed and lived in North Yarmouth and Ambrose, of course, lived on Chebeague Island. All Hamiltons from Chebeague come from Ambrose Hamilton and Deborah Soule [descendent of a Mayflower Pilgrim].
