Born Louis Bush Swisher in a log farm home built by his parents next to Jim Fork (38.87177N 80.88169W), a small tributary of Cedar Creek, on land now part of Cedar Creek State Park in Gilmer Co, WV. Known from childhood as Bush, his mother's maiden name. Family moved to farms at Auburn WV and then on the Berlin Road near Weston WV. Graduated from Weston High School in 1925. Graduated from West Virginia University College of Agriculture, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho, and married Mildred Lorraine King in 1929. Taught Vocational Agriculture at Cairo WV High School, 1929-31; earned a Master's in Agricultural Economics at Cornell University, 1931-33. Desired to pursue a doctorate but Depression era finances did not allow. Worked as a Federal Land Bank appraiser in Buchannan WV 1933-37. Employed by the Farm Security Administration, 1937-46 in Morgantown, Monongalia Co WV; and displaced by a returning WWII veteran. Directed the Monongahela Power Company Farming for Better Living Program, Morgantown WV 1947-79, serving Monongalia, Preston, and Garrett (MD) counties. Also on the Board of Directors of a savings and loan; and appraised real estate before and after retirement. Long time member and officer of Drummond Chapel United Methodist Church, Boy Scout leader, Rotary Club member, and very active for many years in the civic, financial, educational and social affairs of Morgantown and Monongalia County. Like his father, he was active and advanced in Freemasonry. He and Lorraine had three children, the eldest of which, L. Bush Swisher, Jr, M.D., died unexpectedly in 1968 at age 34.
