Mr. Doyle died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Marshall County Healthcare Center in Britton at the age of 84. Philip F. Doyle was born to William "Bill" and Sophia (Nanik) Doyle on Jan. 28, 1922, at Edgeley, N.D. He came with his parents as an infant to Veblen, S.D., where his father was affiliated with the Soo Line Railroad. He spent all his growing up years in Veblen, graduating from Veblen High School in 1940. Philip enjoyed so much as a teenager working at the local gas stations, and shocking grain for Gilford Hill. After graduation, he was employed by the Producers Marketing Co. in Veblen until he joined the U.S. Navy in fall 1942. During World War II he served his country in the Hawaiian Islands, Aleutian Islands and the Philippines. In 1946, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy and returned to Veblen, where he continued his employment with the Producers Marketing Co. In the spring of 1947 he moved to Kidder, S.D., as the manager of the Producers Marketing Co. It was here he met Gladys Haverly, and they were married July 1, 1949. Philip and Gladys continued to live in Kidder until 1955, when they moved to Aberdeen, S.D., so that Gladys could continue her education at Northern. During that time Philip was employed by the R.E. Huffman Business Machine Co. In 1956, they moved to Billings, Mont., where Phillip became affiliated with Sherwin Williams Co., working as a credit manager. After three years he took a traveling job for the company and moved to Fargo, N.D. In 1962 they moved to the Minneapolis area so Philip could continue his work as District Supervisor for the Sherwin Williams Co., covering several states. In 1979, they moved to Britton and Philip continued traveling for Sherwin Williams for five more years. He retired in 1984 after 28 years with the company. Philip was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Britton, and the Reisenweber-Wolf Post #298 of the American Legion of Kidder. He was a generous supporter of many civic organizations and charities in the Britton and Veblen areas. He attended every bake sale that he could, and bought large quantities of goodies to take home and store in the freezer. Then, when his "coffee buddies" would stop by the back door of the house, Philip would be ready with fresh coffee and treats in only three minutes! Coming from a railroading family, Philip loved to watch the trains come and go at the elevator, during harvest. He also enjoyed traveling with Gladys after his retirement. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 56 years, Gladys Doyle of Britton; two brothers: Joe (Irene) Doyle of Campbell, Minn.; John (Cleo) Doyle of Great Falls, Mont.; one sister: Lorraine Doyle of Sisseton, S.D.; a very special friend: Mary Ellen St. Sauver of Britton; and a number of nieces, nephews and their families.
