David Schultz Rains Mr. Rains of Charlotte died peacefully at home on November 24, 2011. David, a retired arbitrator mediator, was born in Harlan, Kentucky, the son of the late Nancy Sykes and William McKinley Rains. He entered the Army at the age of sixteen and served with the 82nd Airborne in Korea. He was a talented amateur boxer on the U.S. Army and the Cincinnati Police Force boxing teams. David was a support group leader and dedicated advocate for the mentally ill. In that capacity he served as past president of Charlotte Rehabilitation Homes and the Charlotte Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). He loved history and was a skilled researcher. He published the book Henry Rains 1767-1838, which is a compendium of his research on the Rains family and two books of semi-auto biographical stories about his Eastern Kentucky roots: The Shaman 1/8s Daughter: Appalachian Mountain Stories and Kentucky Bad Boy: Stories of My Mother and Me. David is survived by his wife of 31 years, Suzie Shermer, his three children Michael Bartholomew Rains, Jennifer Rains Butler, and Daniel Phillip Rains; grandsons Michael Rains and Christopher Bumgarner; eight siblings, Mabel Rains Davis, Thomas Rains, Leona Rains Steinmetz, Esther Rains Morgan, Linda Rains McClure, William Rains, Jack Rains and Jimmy Rains; and his many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, his sisters Lillian Rains, Mamie Rains, and Toni Rains West and his brother Paul McKinley Rains preceded him in death. The family extends its sincere appreciation to the many friends and family who tended to and supported David during his short illness including Dr. Warden Woodard and his kind staff, Sheila Smith, RN, and the staff and volunteers of Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman. A funeral mass will be held at St. Peter Catholic Church, 507 South Tryon Street, Charlotte on Saturday, December 3rd at 2:00 PM. Free parking is available in the Green Parking Garage next door to the church. The family will receive visitors at a reception at the church following the Mass. In lieu of flowers the family would very much appreciate memorial gifts to St. Peter Catholic Church Building Fund or McCreesh Place, which finds housing for homeless men with disabilities. Online condolences may be addressed to www.carolinafuneral.com. Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.
