Charles was the son of Edward M Elder and Henrietta M (Hicks) Elder. He married Hattie Thomas Dyson on 18 Feb 1879 in Nottoway County. Hattie was the daughter of Theodorick Dyson and Ellen (Fowlkes) Dyson.
Charles and Hattie moved to Dinwiddie County, Va.
Charles died between 1897 and 1900. According to his daughter, Lula Bruce (Elder) Bishop, both Charles and Hattie were buried in Butterwood Church cemetery, but their graves haven't been located. It is possible that when the Church was expanded, their graves were hidden by the new structure.
