John served in the 2nd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery from December 27, 1861 through February 11, 1864 during the Civil War.

He later served in the 13th Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve Corp from February 14, 1865 through his discharge on November 14, 1865. While in this unit he was part of the defense forces in and around Washington, D.C.

After the war he was an employee of Delaware State Hospital where he worked as a Painter.

John contracted and died of small pox in the epidemic in the spring of 1902.

He was interred here at marker # 104.
