Gene Lee (Geronimo) Messersmith, age 57 years of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., formerly of Au Gres, passed away Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, at Tennova Medical Center.

Gene was born July 20, 1957, in Midland to the late Edward Lee and Betty Jo (Vennard) Messersmith. He graduated from Western High School in Auburn, in 1975. He worked for many years as a pressman in his family’s print shop before relocating to Tennessee. He was employed at Westgate Resorts in Gatlinburg. The only thing Gene loved more than hunting and fishing were his family and friends. Always ready to participate, Gene brought life and humor to all of his activities, especially as an auctioneer at his family reunions. As a 20 plus year cancer survivor, Gene took great pride serving many years as the Arenac County Chairman with Relay for Life.

Gene is survived by his best friends, Beverly Brewer, Elizabeth Foster and faithful beagle, Sport; sons, Gene (Jennifer) Messersmith II, Robert Wells and Andrew Goeke; daughter, Amy (Josh) Cardinal; two grandchildren, Claire and Dakota; two sisters, Rosemarie (Rick Richmond) Messersmith and Josephine (Robert) Hill; two brothers, Mark (Leann) Messersmith and Stanley (Rick Dummer) Messersmith and will be forever missed.

A memorial service will be held on Jan. 14, from 3-5:30 p.m. in the Riverwalk Room at River Terrace Resort & Convention Center, 240 River Road, Gatlinburg, TN.

His final resting will take place in Au Gres in May 2015.
