Leah B. Diller was born at Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, November 18, 1867, the third of seven children born to Jacob and Anna (Burkholder) Diller. She was ten years old when her parents migrated westward to Illinois. By the mid-1880s she had accompanied her parents and other siblings on to Nebraska, and then south into Kansas.

On September 16, 1893, she made the "Run" into the Cherokee Strip at age twenty-five, and along with her parents, and two of her brothers, John and Aaron, she staked a claim on 160 acres west of Nash, on the Southeast quarter of Section 6, Township 25 North, in Range 8 West of the Indian Meridian. When she filed the claim on November 28, 1893, she had just turned twenty-six ten days before. Three months later Leah and Thomas W. Neal were married, on Mar 1, 1894.

In the 1900 US Federal Census, Leah and Tom were residing in Grant Twp, the northernmost central township of Harper Co., Kansas, and the first three of their seven had been born and were enumerated in this census: Jesse C. (Sept 1895), Anna P. (Apr 1897), and Thomas F. (Dec 1898). By the time the next census rolled around, the family was residing in Ruella Twp, located one township south and west of Grant Twp. In this 1910 US Federal Census the Neal family was enumerated with six children: Jessie (14), Anna (13), Frank (11), Clarence (8), Sadie (6), and Zola (10 months). After sixteen years of marriage, Leah was the mother of seven children, six of whom were living in 1910.

Four years later, tragedy struck the family, and Leah lost her husband, Tom, in January 1914, leaving her with six children to raise—ranging in ages from eighteen down to five. Thus, in the 1920 US Federal Census of Harper County, Leah and three of her children were residing in Lawn Twp, the next contiguous township to the west of Ruella township. Leah was listed as the Head of the family, with her occupation as "farmer, general farm." With her were Anna (age 22), Clarence (age 17), and Zola (age 10).

Leah departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter [Sadie Leah] Anthony, at DuQuoin, [Grant Twp, Harper County], Kansas, Sunday, August 23, 1925, at 10:30 a.m., at the age of fifty-seven years, nine months and five days.

She left three brothers to mourn her departure, John Diller and Arba Diller of Ringwood, Oklahoma, Aaron Diller, of Nash, Oklahoma, three sisters, Mrs. Mike (Priscilla Frickel, of Ringwood, Oklahoma, Mrs. Will (Mary Ellen Wilkinson, Manchester, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Clyde (Silvanna) Blanpied, of Kansas City, Missouri. Six children, Jesse Carl Neal, Duquoin, Kansas; Anna Pearl Burke, Cleo, Oklahoma, Thomas Franklin Neal, Wellington, Kansas, Clarence Edward Neal, Wellington, Kansas, Sadie Leah Anthony, Duquoin, Kansas, Zola Irene Neal, of Duquoin, Kansas; eight grandchildren, besides a host of friends and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents, and one daughter, Mary Ellen, who died in infancy (12 Mar 1906).

Leah was a true wife, a loving mother, and loved by all who knew her. She joined the United Brethren Church at Hillsdale in 1895, later transferring to the Methodist church in Harper, Kansas, in 1915. Mrs. Neal lived in Harper, Kansas, for some time and was certain to be remembered by the many who extended their sympathy to the relatives.

Leah B. (Diller) Neal was laid to rest in the Harper [Kansas] Cemetery.
