Cheryl Lynn Gibbs, 59 peacefully went to be with the Lord at home on January 19, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. Cheryl was a lifelong resident of Humboldt County. She attended St. Bernard's Elemenary and High school. She was a loving wife and mother for over 40 years. Cheryl loved traveling, cooking and had a flare for interior design. She was known for her beauty and had an eye for style which she showed in her everyday life. Cheryl had strength of character, a sense of humor and quick wit which she retained until the very end. Her family appreciated her ability to exercise great wisdom and timely insight. Over the past several years Cheryl attended Faith Center Church and tried to apply Christian principles to her everyday life. Cheryl was a hard working and dedicated employee of Redwood Restaurants for over 30 years. She provided great customer service and developed strong friendships with both her co workers and customers. Cheryl was the oldest of 7 children; she was a sister who appreciated each of her sibling's individual abilities and qualities. She was affectionately known as, "Meme" to her 6 grandchildren. She loved and spoiled each and every one! Cheryl is survived by her husband Ray, her children Rich (Shannon) of Verona, Wisconsin, Rene of Eureka ,her six grandchildren; Nathanael, Benjamin, Savannah, Richie, Josiah and Mercedes, her siblings Michael Benson, Patricia (Bill) Graziose, Ralph Benson, Lori Benson, Julie (Sonny) Tucker and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Janice Benson, her brother Dennis Benson and also her Grandparents Charlie and Agnes Ritchie. A scripture that typified Cheryl's life is Proverbs 31:25-30 which says, "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness. Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her, there are many virtuous and capable women in the world but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised". Visitation will be held on Friday, January 22, 2010 at Pierce Mortuary Chapels from 3:00pm to 7:00pm. Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life service at Faith Center Church on Saturday January 23, 2010 at 12 noon with Pastor Rich Gibbs officiating. Graveside service and potluck reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be set up in Cheryl's name to the American Cancer Society.
