Father of Captain James Cook, FRS, RN, British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy.

James and Grace Cook had eight children. Four died in childhood. John, the eldest son, died aged 23. Only the second son James and his sisters Margaret and Christiana survived. Margaret married a man named Fleck of Redcar, and Christiana married a fisherman named Cocker of Staithes.
In 1771, after the death of Grace Cook, James Cook senior went to live with his daughter Margaret Fleck in Redcar.
He died six weeks after his son was killed, without ever knowing the tragic news.
He was buried on 1st April 1779; according to some sources the same day that he died.

[The headstone photographs show the location of his burial and also that of his wife, Grace, who is buried with her five other children at All Saints Church, Great Ayton, near Middlesbrough. The headstone at Marske was erected by the parents of John James Robinson, who was lost at sea.]
