OBITUARY - IVAN "Kylie" A. CALHOUN, Forest Republican, November 2003
Ivan "Kylie" Arnold Calhoun, age 80, died unexpectedly at his home in Laona on Thursday, November 20, 2003. Kylie was born in Laona on June 16, 1923, the son of Raleigh and Burttie (Brewer) Calhoun. He grew up in Laona and worked for a time as a pin setter at Reno's Bowling Alley and at Connor Forest Industries. On January 9, 1943, he married Ethel Betker and on April of that year, entered the United States Army and served faithfully in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946 and he returned to Laona where he became a member of the Cook-Elfors VFW Post 6823.
He went back to work for Connor Forest Industries as a millwright which he did from 1947 until the furniture factory closed in 1986. Not one to sit still, he decided to work during his "retirement" and he spent ten years working the garbage pickup route in Laona. He was also very proud of his faithful service to the people of Laona as a volunteer firefighter for 50 years until his retirement seven years ago. Kylie enjoyed many things in life, including making firewood and all the hunting that the beautiful Northwoods offered. He and Bob Thornton would often buy a license and with one bringing the gun and the other shells, would do their best to fill it. Of course, it was fun even if the tag went unfilled! He enjoyed playing schmier and was always good for a visit and a beer with his friends at the local taverns. Most of all, Kylie loved his family, especially the grandchildren and gret-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Kylie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ethel; children: Francie (John) Menting of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Kathy (Ed) Collins of Exeland, Dave (Darlene) Calhoun of Laona, Pete (Yongie) Calhoun of Howard's Grove, Joe (special friend Brenda) Calhoun of Wausau; two sisters, Ina Webb of Bloomington, Minn., Judy Schmidt of Lake Havasu City, Arizona; one brother, John Calhoun of Laona. Kylie is further survived by 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Ellen, and one brother, Robert.
Funeral services for Kylie were led by Father John Cerkas at St. Leonard Catholic Church in Laona at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 24. Friends called upon the family at the Suminski Funeral Home in Crandon on Sunday, November 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Following services, Kylie was taken in formal procession to the Laona Cemetery where graveside services were held and the Cook-Elfors VFW Post provided military honors. Pallbearers included Bob Thornton, Ted Ludeman, Pat Votis, Bob Baltus, Harold Mortson and Kyle Menting.
