Altenburger Rites Friday At Ottoville

George Altenburger Died In St. Rita’s Hospital

A Good Citizen

Active In Community, Political Circles

With the death of George E. Altenburger of Ottoville, which occurred in St. Rita’s Hospital, Lima, Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock, Putnam County lost one of its civic workers and political leaders.

Mr. Altenburger had bee ailing for six months and his condition was regarded as serious for two months preceding his departure. His death was attributed to a weakened heart condition and other complications. He was seventy-three years of age.

Born in Auglaize county on August 26, 1867, the son of Peter and Mary Altenburger, the deceased came to Jackson township, Van Wert county, with his parents when a lad of ten years. He received his education in the communities where he spent his youth, and in 1894 he came to Ottoville where he served as a clerk in the general store operated by Winkleman and Vincke for a period of ten years.

In 1904 he opened a general insurance agency and real estate and loan office at Ottoville and continued in that business until the time of his death. The same year he helped organize the Farmer’s Mutal Aid association at Ottoville and served as secretary of that organization for a period of thirty years.

He also served as justice of the peace of Monterey township for more than thirty years, and served on the Putnam county Democratic and Executive committees for many years. He was a member of the latter committee at the time of his death.

In business, civic and political undertakings he was forward and frank in his expressions, and was recognized for his honesty and sincerity of purpose. He gave freely and willingly to those things, which he believed for the good of the community and for the welfare of its citizens, and worked untiringly in their behalf. He was a staunch democrat and worked unceasingly in promoting the interests of that party and its candidates.

On September 29, 1897, he was married at Ottoville to Miss Dorothy Schlagbaum, daughter of Bernard and Clara Schlagbaum. To this union five children were born, and they survive the passing of a faithful companion and father. Mrs. Altenburger preceded her husband in death on April 4, 1907.

Children surviving are Misses Alberta and Clara Altenburger, at home; Mrs. Irvin Kalt, Dayton; George J., of Westminster, Maryland; and Walter of Detroit, Michigan. He also leaves a sister, Miss Flora Altenburger, who resided with her brother and family; three brothers, Joseph, of Ottoville; F. X. of Cleveland, and Peter of Botkins, Ohio, and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Magdelene Krabach, of Wapakoneta, and Mrs. John Hohlbein, of Ottoville, and four brothers, John of Wapakoneta; Louis, of Delphos; Andrew, of Cloverdale and William who died in infancy.

Mr. Altenburger was a faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic church at Ottoville, and was affiliated with the St. Joseph’s society of the parish and the Ottoville Catholic Knights of Ohio.

Funeral services will be held in the Ottoville church Friday morning at nine o’clock. Rev. Henry Gerwert, the pastor, will officiate. The remains will be interred in the parish cemetery.
