Charles E. Lamb, 79, of Winterset, died of respiratory failure Oct. 31, 2000 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Charles Lamb was born March 21, 1921, to William H. and Jessie M. (Douglass) Lamb of Truro. A World War II veteran of the United States Army, he married Mildred M. Pettis on Oct. 6, 1941 in Bethany, Mo. She preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1982. He later married Ethel Howell Strable on Jan. 15, 1983 in Adel. He was a long-time resident of Clarke County and worked for the Department of Transportation in highway maintenance for 22 years, retiring in 1981. Charles spent 17 years in Madison County and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142 of Winterset and the D.A.V.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mildred and six brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; two daughters, Karen Trumbo (husband Robert) and Linda Shaw (husband Wilbur), both of Des Moines; two sons, Larry Lamb (wife Janice) of Decatur and Gary Lamb of Des Moines; two stepdaughters, Bonnie L. Sharon (husband Bernard) of Redfield and Nadine Sparks (husband Ronald) of Des Moines; two stepsons, David Strable (wife Oma) of Stigler, Okla., and Dennis Strable (wife Melinda) of Ankeny; a brother, Earl Schlomer of Grimes; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; and nine stepgreat-grandchildren.
