MOUNT PLEASANT'S LAST G.A.R. VETERAN CALLED BY DEATH
MOUNT PLEASANT, January 19 -- James MONROE died at his home this morning after a long illness from cancer of the stomach.
Mr. MONROE was born in England in 1847, and came to Utah with his parents in 1855, crossing the plains in Captain Allred's company. The family first settled in Spanish Fork, coming to Mount Pleasant a few years later, and Mr. MONROE lived here continuously since.
During the closing years of the civil war, Mr. MONROE, then only a boy, enlisted with the northern forces, but hostilities ceased before he saw active service. He was a member of a G.A.R. post in Salt Lake, and was the last G.A.R. veteran in Mount Pleasant. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Pearl BUNCE of Latuna and Miss Ruby MONROE of Sunderville, and a brother and a sister, Isaac A. MONROE of Nanoni, Iowa, and Mrs. Della MONTGOMERY of Pacific Grove, California. Funeral arrangements will await the arrival of relatives.
