George Gordon Patton was born 17 January 1757 in Inverness, Scotland, son of James Patton (1722-1768) and Eleanor (Helen) Gordon Patton. He married 24 December 1784 at Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, Virginia to Sarah Stringfellow (1766-1848), daughter of James Madison Stringfellow (1734-1805) and Susannah Smith Stringfellow (1725-1777). They apparently had fifteen children: Elizabeth, George, Harriett, Lydia, Maria, Susan, James, William, John, Thornton, Elliot S., Arthur, Alexander, Robert M. and Henry C.

George Gordon Patton enlisted for the Revolutionary War from Falmouth, Virginia in 1777 and served 18 months. He became a sergeant and served under Captain William Wallace in the Regiment of Colonel Fowler. He participated in the Battle of Brandywine.
