Scott was born July 11, 1934, in Magnolia, Ark., to Lacy A. and Katie Sistrunk Scott, and he grew up on a farm near Carthage. After his graduation from Carthage High School and Panola Junior College, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas. He later completed two years of graduate studies in journalism at the University of Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by a brother, Donald, of Elysian Fields.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Jean Dunlap Scott of Grand Saline; three adult children: James Scott and Elizabeth Scott Steadman, both of Fort Worth, and John Scott of Murphy; five grandchildren-Travis Steadman of Garland, Rebekah Steadman of Bangkok, Thailand, Michael Steadman of Fort Worth, Rachel Scott of Austin and Emily Scott of Murphy; two sisters-Wanda Scott Gray and Shirley Scott Williams of Longview; two brothers-Lane Scott of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mervin Scott of Carthage; and several nieces and nephews.
