A1C Derrick Ryan Ross, age 19, resident of 116 W. Smiley Ave., Shelby died Monday, June 23, 2003 in Shelby following injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident.
Born June 5, 1984 he had been a Shelby resident all his life. Derrick was a 2002 graduate of Shelby High School, where he was a member of the cross country and track teams and the FFA. He enlisted in the Ohio Air National Guard after graduation and was active with the 179th Airlift Wing in Mansfield. He was a licensed pilot and had a passion for flying. Derrick was currently attending the Ohio State University and was employed with Lowe's of Ontario. He loved animals and was never without a smile.
Survivors include his mother, Beth (Main) Ross of Shelby; his sister, mentor and friend, Sheila Ross of Columbus; paternal grandparents, Harold and Wilma Ross of Shelby; maternal grandparents, Earl and Mildred Main of Lakeland, FL; many aunts, uncles, cousins and countless good friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Michael P. Ross on April 23, 2000.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday from the First Lutheran Church in Shelby. Reverend Steven C. Bond will officiate with interment in Oakland Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the 179th Airlift Wing Honor Guard. Friends may call at the Barkdull Funeral Home in Shelby on Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorial expressions may be made to the Shelby Whippet Athletic Boosters and the American Cancer Society.
