FREETOWN ~ Ralph Evans Gurney, Sr. 95 of East Freetown died at home Saturday on Saturday 25, 1995 after a long illness. He was the widower of Anne (Hartley) Gurney and the son of the late Gertrude E. (Rounseville) and Jonathan R. Gurney, III. He married Anne on November 8, 1924 in Rochester Massachusetts.

A lifelong resident of East Freetown, he attended the East Freetown Congregational Christian Church and was employed by the former City Coal Company of New Bedford and the former Hartley Saw Mill of Rochester.

Mr. Gurney attended a one-room schoolhouse in East Freetown, the Jireh Swift school in New Bedford, and was a graduate of New Bedford High School. He was a member of the Rochester Senior Citizens who enjoyed cribbage and duck pin bowling and at the age of 94 he bowled a 166 string with four consecutive strikes. He also deliighted in summersing in his cottage in Marion.

Survivors include four sons, two daughters, (Ralph Gurney, Janus Gurney, Carol Gurney, Joyce Gurney, David Gurney, Hartley Gurney) two sisters, 21 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are by Kirby Funeral home, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford. Services to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Tuesday February 28, 1995 at 1 PM at Kirby Funeral home. Calling ours are Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Friends of Rochester Senior Center. Interment in Sherman Cemetery, Rochester.
