Elvin Evatt
December 2, 1922 - January 11, 2015

Elvin Ennis Evatt, 92, of Ralls went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 11, 2015, at his residence in Ralls. Elvin was born on December 2, 1922, in Erath, Texas, to James Ennis Evatt and Minnie (Dawdy) Evatt. The eldest Evatt son, Elvin and his parents moved to the family's farm atop Antelope Hill in the Owens community south of Ralls by horse-drawn wagon shortly after his birth. He resided and farmed there until his retirement in 1999.

Elvin met the love of his life, Ada Lee Powell, in Ralls and, after his tour of duty with the U.S. Army during World War II, they married at her mother's home in Ralls on October 12, 1946. The two celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2014.

Elvin lived life to the fullest and enjoyed swapping stories with friends, good food, fishing, gospel music and watching wrestling. All who knew him were familiar with his booming voice, contagious laugh, and unselfish heart. Throughout his farming years, he never failed to produce a bounteous garden. It was not uncommon to see him carrying bushel baskets of black-eyed peas into Methodist Hospital in Lubbock to the doctors who cared for his aging parents or pickup trucks lining the Evatt's turn-rows early on summer Saturday mornings. After his retirement, he always had a project underway, and family and friends were often recipients of wind chimes, birdhouses, and rain gauges. Forever the historian and "spinner of yarns," Elvin's story, "Thank God, I'm a Country Boy!" was featured in, A Living History of the Lower Texas Panhandle: Cow Chips in the Cook Stove (Glair & Garvey, 2011, pp. 24-26).

He was a longtime member of the Emma Church of Christ in Ralls. Elvin was named an honorary member of the Ralls Future Homemakers in 1967 because of hours dedicated to sponsoring FHA events and trips with his daughters. It was commonplace to see him hauling the RHS Victory Bell or football equipment trailer during his children's school years. And, in 2002, he and Ada Lee were named Mr. and Mrs. Cotton Boll by the City of Ralls.

Elvin is survived by his wife, Ada Lee, and daughter, Brenda Evatt, of the home; daughter, Beccy (Evatt) Hambright and husband, Russell, of Lubbock; son, Tracy Evatt, and wife, Julie, of Colleyville; grandchildren, Matt and Dan Evatt of Dallas; Coleman Williams of Dallas; and, Cassidy (Williams) Ness and her husband, Ben, of Leander; great-grandsons, Cason and Cai Ness of Leander; his sisters, Berta Cornelius of Abilene, Elnaree Southward of Ralls; a sister-in-law, Betty Evatt of Lubbock; and, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Billy Ray Evatt, all of Ralls.

A celebration of Elvin's life will be held at the Ralls Community Center on Tilford Street in downtown Ralls, on Thursday, January 15, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. January 16, 2015 at the Emma Church of Christ under the direction of Adams Funeral Home, Ralls, Texas. Honorary pallbearers include: Dwight Roye, Norman Norris, Don Hamilton, Kenneth Sellers, and Jimmy Moore, all of Ralls. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
