Dr Jacqueline (Townsend) Hunter was born on October 29, 1931 in Durham, Durham County, North Carolina, the daughter of Leo Townsend and Alease "Chippy" (Ruffin) Townsend.


After finishing high school, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree at North Carolina Central University and finished up in 1985 at The University of Southern Mississippi with her PhD.


Jacqueline was married on June 21, 1954 in Durham Township, Durham County, North Carolina to Harold Hunter (1926-2013), the son of Claude Hunter Sr (22 Sep 1894–Sep 1966) and Alta Geraldine (Walker) Hunter (ca 1898– ).


She was a professor of Biology and taught at Tennessee State University, Fisk University, and ended her career at Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana after 34 years of teaching.


With many achievements in her lifetime, one of the biggest was the SOAR premed program that she helped author with other colleagues at Xavier University while teaching in that program: It made Xavier a national leader in placing African-American students into medical school.


Jacqueline was a resident of Hendersonville, Sumner County, Tennessee, and 83 years old when she passed away at home on January 9, 2015.


Preceded in death by her husband and by her brothers Leo Townsend and Howard Townsend, she was survived by a daughter, a married son, three grandchildren, two brothers, a sister and a number of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and close friends.


Celebration of Life Services were held at Hendersonville Funeral Home, and burial was in Hendersonville Memory Gardens.
