Gwendolyn Helen Pierce, 98, of Tomah, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. She was born March 14, 1909, to Frank and Millie (Van Kirk) Miller at Sparta. She was united in marriage to Ivan Pierce on Nov. 2, 1926, in Sparta. He preceded her in death in October of 1969. Ivan and Helen farmed in the Town of Greenfield; she moved to Tomah after spending many years on the farm. She was the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church, having been a member since 1955. She cooked and helped with many of the functions that were held at the church. She worked as a nurses aide at Tomah Memorial Hospital. She was a proud volunteer and volunteered at the Senior Citzens and worked with the AARP and RSVP programs. Helen was a lifetime member of the Tomah Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by a daughter, Marian (Jesse) Johnson of Tomah; two sons, Jack (Lois) of Tomah and Dale of Pasadena, CA; 19 grandchildren, Geraldine (Gerald) Hackbarth, Donald (Patti) Pierce, Kenneth “Smoke“ (Sue) Pierce, Dean (Sue) Pierce, Jr., Dawn (John) Laudon, Diane (Steve) Johnson, Darrel (Lisa) Pierce, Denise (Kurt) Prise, Wesley (Julie) Pierce, Jeffrey Pierce, Phyllis (Gerald) Olsen, Kevin (Linda) Pierce, Barbara Johnson, Lori (Mike) Eckelberg, Dwight (Cheryl) Johnson, Nancy (Mike) Kelly, Julie (Keith) Nelson, Angela Johnson, and Dave (Katie) Johnson; 41 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; two daughters- in-law, Patricia Pierce of Tomah and Josephine Pierce of Tunnel City; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ivan; four sons, William, Milo, Leland and Dean; a daughter, Marjorie; a daughter-in-law, Clarabelle Pierce; a brother, Robert, and a sister, Mae Arnold.
Funeral services were held today (Monday), Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1105 Butts Ave., Tomah. Pastor William Swan and Pastor Wesley Schirmer officiated. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Sparta.
Relatives and friends called on Sunday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Sonnenburg Family Funeral Home, Tomah, and at church from 10 a.m. today until time of the service.
