Poet and Author. Made his debute in 1927 with "I en främmande stad". With the collections of poems "Ensamstående bildad herre" (1935), "Att övervinna världen" (1937) and "Fem kornbröd och två fiskar" (1942) he was established as of of Sweden's most important poets. From 1936 to 1950 he was head of the Swedish Radio Theater and he was also the editor of the magazine "Lundagård". From 1940 until his death he was a member of the Swedish Academy for Literature. Many of his poems have been set to music, among them "Förklädd Gud" (music by Lars-Erik Larsson) and "Han kom som en vind" (music by Lennart Moberg). His last collection of poems, "Ögon och läppar", was realeased in 1959. Furthermore he was a distinguished translator of Greek Tragedy and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Lund. He came to suffer from a muscle disease - myastenia gravis - which made him periodically forced to respiratory treatment. This made him take his own life by drowning.
