Joseph Fletcher Florentine was born in New York City to James Florentine and Phebe Ann Ackerman. He was named Joseph Fletcher after the husband of his mother's sister Jane. He married 1st Emma Matilda Noyes with whom he had three children: Munroe Ceneph, Joseph, Emma. The latter two died as infants and Munroe died at age 10. He was married the 2nd time to Margaret Elizabeth Dodge on September 16, 1850 at the home (119 Henry St., NYC) of her father Cyrenius Newcomb Dodge. They were the parents of six children: Margaret Dodge, William Dodge, Sarah J., Phoebe Munroe, Mary Emma, Joseph Fletcher. He was a carpenter by trade and for a short time was a merchant in Brooklyn in partnership with his brother-in-law, William Dodge.Removed to Illinois in 1859 settling in Dixon, then Altona in 1861 and finally Chicago by 1870. His wife described him as a gentle man. Blind at the end of his life. Died of paralysis of the heart. His ancestry goes back to Marc Florentine and Ann Carlie who were in New York City before 1700.
