Ed was a proud member of Myers Memorial Methodist Church, Gastonia, where he served as the Chairman of Myers Memorial Methodist Church Building Committee which built the new sanctuary. In addition, he served as District Lay Leader of United Methodist Church for Gaston, Lincoln and Cleveland Counties.
He was Chairman of the Gaston County Hospital Study Committee leading to build the new Gaston Memorial Hospital, which is now CaroMont Regional Medical Center. He was Vice-Chairman of Hospital Bond Committee serving under Chairman J.K. "Buddy" Lewis for the 15 million dollar bond issue to finance the new Gaston Memorial Hospital (CaroMont). Ed was a member of Gaston College Study Committee, serving as Board Trustee for 16 years; 3 years as Vice-Chairman and 12 years as Chairman.
He received an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Belmont Abbey College for his contribution to education and his many public service contributions. He organized Special Education Foundation to train teachers for handicapped children, and was President of Western Carolina Center Foundation for handicapped children.
Ed was Chairman of the United Way and won best campaign of the year for North Carolina; Past President and life member of Gastonia Optimist Club; President of Gastonia Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of Gaston County Heart Fund Campaign; Gastonia Civitan Citizens Award; President of North Carolina Trustees Association for community colleges; winner of Allen Sims award from Gaston Community Foundation; awarded Paul Harris Fellow from Gastonia East Rotary Club; Chairman of City of Gastonia Traffic and Transportation Advisory Committee for many years; Jaycees Outstanding Young Man of the year; member of North Carolina Association of CPAs and member of American Institute of CPAs.
Ed served as a Motor Machinists Mate in the US Navy as he fought in the South Pacific during WWII, and was one of the last surviving members of the "Men of '24". He was formerly employed with A. B. Carter Inc., and then joined Hoyt Butler to create the accounting firm of Butler and Stowe, CPAs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Robert Edward (Eddie) Stowe, Darrell Gene (DeGe) Stowe, and his brother Rev. Dr. Joe Stowe. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Joyce Corn Stowe; daughter, Sherry Stacy & husband Mike Stacy; granddaughter, Kim Stacy; grandson Bryan Stacy & wife Nikki; great-granddaughters, Madison and Samantha Stacy; brother-in-law, Ken Corn & wife Phyllis, and sister-in-law, Beverly Stowe, all of Gastonia; nephews, Bill Stowe & wife Tollie, of Polkville NC; Gene Stowe of Austin, TX; & niece Marie Stowe of Myrtle Beach.
