George was the son of William W. Black & Frances Mary Allen.

George was a graduate of the Normal School at Lock Haven and taught school for three years. He then attended a technical school in Effingham, IL, where he learned photo-engraving and photography.

He held positions as an engraver in Chicago, Cincinnati, Buffalo and Cleveland. His health became impaired from the chemicals he used in the engraving trade and he moved to Arizona, where his health improved. He later worked as a photographer in Colorado Springs, CO and then traveled throughout Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas as an itinerant photographer.

George did not marry.
