Artist. He was internationally renowned and widely recognized as one of the most original and masterful sculptors of the modernist era. A former apprentice to Henry Moore, he has been involved in every major development in modern sculpture throughout his fifty year career. After creating welded steel works, he ultimately broke away from the influences of David Smith and Anthony Caro to invent his own sculptural language, pouring molten metal to create abstract shapes. His work is in collections throughout the world, including the Tate Gallery, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Laumeier Sculpture Park, Storm King Art Center, and Grounds for Sculpture, which has six of Witkin's sculptures, including "Garden State", made of 53 tons of hand-carved Zimbabwe granite, which Mr. Witkin devoted himself to exclusively for more than a year.   He is survived by his daughters Nadine Witkin and Tamari Witkin-Marcus.
