Nerene Baskett left this world peacefully on the afternoon of January 9, 2015, surrounded by her immediate family. She was born on December 20, 1918, in Shelby, Missouri, to Dolores and Charles Maxwell. Nerene was the second of four sisters who were raised on a farm in the hills of northern Missouri and quickly learned the virtues of thrift and hard work. Two sisters, Edna Atwood and Viola Lambert, both from Iowa, preceded her in death. Her youngest sister, Lilah Forbes, resides in Brookfield, Missouri.

Nerene attended Northeast Missouri Teachers College (now Truman State University) and taught at Willow Vale, a small country school. She met Ray Baskett when he came in to help her start the stove on winter mornings. They were married on June 5, 1940, in Kirksville. Ray joined the Army in 1942 and was part of the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. While he was in the service, Nerene lived and worked in Kansas City. After his return, they moved to Cameron, where their son Melvin was born in 1947. In 1949, they moved to Carrollton, where they lived together until Ray’s death in 1992. Ray and Nerene especially enjoyed traveling to Iowa and Colorado, as well as family reunions and celebrations with Nerene’s three sisters, Ray’s sister Velma, and their extended family.

Nerene was an active member of Carrollton United Methodist Church for many years, where she participated in Class 13 Sunday School, served as church treasurer, and lived one of her life’s values of “everyone helping people in need.” She worked for over 20 years at Mattingly’s Dime Store in Carrollton, where she developed many lasting friendships, and was also active in the VFW Auxiliary. As Melvin grew up, she enjoyed attending his baseball games, Scouting events and school activities. A special passion for Nerene was gardening. She was a Master Gardener before the term was popularly used. One summer, she grew a tomato 17 inches in diameter. She delighted her family with meals fresh from the garden, and her recipes were featured in the local newspaper. Nerene’s last few years were spent at Monroe Manor in Carrollton and then at Life Care Center in Brookfield, where she could be close to her sister Lilah.

Nerene leaves a legacy of love to her son Melvin and his wife Mary of Lawrence, Kansas, and to her two beloved grandchildren, Michael Baskett of New York City and Meghan Baskett of Denver.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Carrollton, Missouri, with Reverend Williams officiating. There will be a family luncheon in the fellowship hall from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the church for a gathering and visitation.

Burial will be at Carroll Memory Gardens in Carrollton, Missouri.

Honorary pallbearers are Michael Baskett, Meghan Baskett, Janeil Atwood, Shirlene Hoots, Gene Lambert, Wayne Lambert, Nadine Brown, Violet Lindroth, John Spencer, Gerald Spencer, Roger Baskett, Don Baskett
