Author, Screenwriter. He will be best remembered for penning the novel "Dog Soldiers" (1974), which was made into a motion picture adaptation titled "Who'll Stop the Rain" (1978). He had a difficult childhood, as his father abandoned him and his mother suffered from schizophrenia, which required a lengthy period of hospitalization. Young Robert spent three years in an orphanage. He found his interest in reading and writing during his high school years, however he dropped out prior to graduation. He served with the United States Navy and following his discharge, he found work in the newspaper industry. After marrying, he relocated to New Orleans and settled in California, where he completed his first novel "A Hall of Mirrors" (1967). In 1970, the work was made into a motion picture adaptation titled "WUSA" which starred Paul Newman. His second novel "Dog Soldiers" (1974) earned him a National Book Award. His final book was titled "Death of the Black-Haired Girl" (2013). He died of complications from pulmonary disease.
