John W. Tate passed away Saturday morning at his home in Danville. Funeral services were conducted from the home Sunday afternoon, and interment was in Leemont Cemetery.
The deceased was 86 years old and a Confederate Veteran, having seen service in Co., B, 53rd Virginia Regiment, Stewart's Brigade, Pickett's Division.
He participated in the famous charge at Gettysburg.
Until recent years was a regular attendant at all Confederate reunions.
Mr. Tate sustained a broken hip in a fall about four weeks ago, and due to his age, had been in a declining condition since. He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Cora Jackson, and the following children: Mrs. Geo. Brafford, Mrs. Charles A. Hubbard, W. A. Tate, Carl Tate and J. H. Tate of Danville, Va., Mrs. Mattie Davis and J. S. Tate of Richmond, Va. and a sister, Mrs. Henry Barber of Princeton, W. Va.
