Samuel was one of five children born to Samuel Sydney Bradford and Katherine Spotswood Braxton Bradford. He was raised at Fredericksburg where his father was a civil engineer. Samuel was an ammunition supplies supervisor at Baltimore, Maryland when he married to Marion DeSaussure Northrop on 15 June 1917 at Fredericksburg. They made their home first at Baltimore and then about 1920 at Richmond, Virginia where he was treasurer of a lighting corporation. They relocated to Eatonsville, Maryland about 1930 where he was a telephone company superintendent. They relocated again about 1935 to Hagerstown, Maryland where he was associated with Potomac Edison Company, first as a promotional manager and later as vice-president. Samuel and Marion were the parents of three sons; Edmond Braxton Bradford, Samuel Sydney Bradford, and Thomas Richey Bradford.
