NEW BEDFORD – Richard H. Ashworth, 81, of New Bedford, died Thursday, October 28, 2010, at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Phyllis (Madsen) Ashworth, whom he married November 22, 1950. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late John and the late Dorothy (Vinal) Ashworth.

A 1946 graduate of New Bedford High School, he then entered the U. S. Navy and served in the military from 1946-1948. He later graduated from the New Bedford Textile Institute with a first degree class in Textile Chemistry in 1952 and became a Technical Director of Arkwright Finishing Division in Fall River until its closing. He then worked at the former Davis Mill until retiring in 1994.

Richard was a member of the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner, New Bedford, when living in Acushnet. He worked on the former Helping Hand Committee, to help church improvements and was a Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack #14 for twenty-two years. While living in South Plymouth, Richard attended the First Congregational Church of Wareham where he was a Deacon and served as Treasurer for sixteen years. He later attended the First Congregational Church in Marion after moving back to New Bedford.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years; three sons, Carl J. Ashworth and his wife Gayle of Hope Valley, RI, David Ashworth and his loving companion Deborah Kronteres, and Kenneth Ashworth and his wife Nancy of East Taunton; a sister, Myra Crosby of Maine; a sister-in-law, Alice Ashworth of Peru, ME; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Ashworth was the brother of the late Donald, Raymond and the Rev. Ronald Ashworth.

His calling hours will be from 2:00-5:00 PM in THE DONAGHY FUNERAL HOME, 465 County Street, New Bedford. His funeral service will be in the funeral home followed by interment in Acushnet Cemetery.
