Earnest Truett Horne was born November 18, 1920 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas, to parents George Espy Horne and Effie Ione McCalister. He was the fourth of five children, with two brothers: Earl James and Carl Andrew, and two sisters: Alene Nora and Willie Marie. As a child, he was nicknamed "Pete"; later in life he was commonly called "Earnie".
His father was a salaried refinery worker in the blossoming Brown county oil and gas industry of the 1920’s. His mother kept the house organized and raised the five children. Earnie's teenage years were during the Depression of the 1930’s, and he took on many odd jobs to help add to the family budget.
Earnie served in the military during World War II. He spent some of his military time at Randolph Field in San Antonio, Texas, where he met his first wife, Theresa Virginia Harding, a farm girl from Iowa also stationed at Randolph Field.
They were married shortly after the war, in Syracuse, New York, on January 26, 1946. The newlyweds moved to central Texas where Earnie worked with his brother, Earl, to start a plumbing supply and services company. Earnie and Theresa had two sons, Charles Andrew and Earnest Jr., during their eight year marriage. Earnie married three more times: To Anna Fern Harding Ames, Marilyn Ruth Barnes Barnett, and Marjorie Marie Webster McClintic Bedsaul. These marriages brought nine step-children into his family; a family that has grown to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren now spread across the country.
Earnie relocated from Texas to Oregon in the 1950’s. He spent the next forty years applying his plumbing and pipefitting skills as a member of the United Association of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 290. Aside from work, Earnie devoted much time and attention to his church and was an active member of both Clackamas Park Friends Church in Clackamas and Open Gate Church of the Nazarene in Keizer.
Earnie also loved the outdoors. As a younger man, he would frequently take hikes and camping trips. In his later years, he enjoyed drives and walks through parks and along the seashore. He especially liked fishing and could often be found with a fishing pole in his hand.
Earnie departed this life on November 25, 2014, at the age of 94 years and 7 days. He is preceded in death by his siblings, his four wives and his eldest son.
