The Sykes family moved to Jackson on Jimmy's 14th birthday. When Jimmy was 18 years old, he followed his father's footsteps building houses in Jackson. Later, he was taught to build cabinets by his mentor, Kelly Tubbs. As his work progressed, he became a Master Craftsman in Cabinetry. He supervised cabinet shops for Watlington Bros.
