Edith Allen George, 97, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2015.
Born in Covington, Kentucky, on August 25, 1917, she was the eldest of three daughters born to Henry P. Allen and Bess Gary Allen.
Edith was always an honor student in spite of attending numerous schools as her father moved the family around seeking better opportunities during hard times in this country. In those years, she learned how to make friends easily and to be independent and self-reliant, skills that served her well the rest of her life and which she instilled in her children. Her freshman year at Baylor University was halted when she contracted typhoid fever. Instead, she attended Tyler Junior College, graduating Phi Theta Kappa. Shortly thereafter, she met Wiley R. George of Houston, Texas. They married on June 28, 1939. Edith and Wiley lived briefly in Beaumont, where he assisted in war efforts in oil production. A short time later, they returned to Houston, where Wiley continued his lifetime career in law, maritime shipping, labor relations, the Port of Houston and the West Gulf Maritime Association. They became active members of South Main Baptist Church, raised their three daughters, were widely involved in the greater Houston community and formed countless lifetime friendships. They were married 44 years before his death in 1983. Edith devoted her life to her family, her friends and her church. She was always willing to accept a new opportunity, or "to make something happen" when times got too quiet. Her example and influence lives on in her family who lovingly called her "Dommie." She was a faithful, active member of South Main Baptist Church over 70 years. Edith served as a nursery director for 52 years, thereby knowing generation after generation of church families. For over 20 years, she volunteered weekly preparing sandwiches for the homeless. She was named an Honored Deacon in 2002. A significant joy of Edith's life was the Sewing Club, a group of 10 exceptional friends who met weekly in their homes for over 60 years and shared lunch, a little sewing, their stories and their lives. Their bonds of friend ship continue today through their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Edith is survived by her family; daughters, Emily George Tinsley and husband Richard D. Tinsley of Houston, Betsy George Pyle and husband Doug Pyle of Comanche, and Nancy George Doss and husband Skeet Doss of Midland; grandchildren, Robyn Tinsley, Allison Tinsley, Holly Boudreaux Brookins, Zach Doss and wife Vickie Doss, and Dixie Doss; seven great-grandchildren, Karl S. Maier, Tinsley Maier, Tag Brookins, Gannon Brookins, Nash Brookins, Wyatt Doss and Emily June Doss; brothers-in-law, Charles Thomas of Sulphur Springs and Ralph Jud Adams of Tyler; sister-in-law Irene George of Fairfax, Virginia; many nieces, nephews and extended family members who have remained close to her throughout her life; and by a host of friends of all ages.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Dixie Allen Thomas and Betsy Allen Scott; her sister-in-law, Laura George Adams; and brothers-in-law, Robert L. George and Robert E. Scott.
