Charles Richard “Mick” McMahan, age 85 of Fairborn, passed away Tuesday January 6, 2015 in the Friends Care Community.

An infant daughter, Mary Lou McMahan, and wife of 59 years, Joan McMahan, preceded him in death.

Survived by two sons Rick McMahan of Cantwell, Alaska and Greg McMahan (William Berg) of Woodbridge, Connecticut; two daughters Nancy McMahan (Jim Hapner) and Cindy Rinn (Ted), both of Fairborn. Grandchildren Cory Heaton-Haas (Tony) of Powell, OH; Andy Pierson (Jen) of the state of Washington; Ryan Heaton (Matt Houchin) of Orlando, FL; Amy Baker of Fairborn; Stephen Hale of Columbus, and Charles McMahan-Hapner of West Palm Beach, FL. Four great-grandchildren, Sam and Jack Pierson, and Abby and Zach Haas.

Mick was born in 1929 to Winifred and Mildred McMahan in Hershey, PA. They settled in Springfield, OH, where much of their respective families resided, andlater moved to Fairfield (now Fairborn). Mick graduated from Bath Township High School in 1946 where he lettered in baseball, basketball, and track.

He received a track scholarship to attend Wittenberg University where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. At Wittenberg he met Joan Fisher whom he married. After college he served as a corporal and instructor in the US Army and then the Army Reserve. Joan and Mick began their family when he returned from service. Mick used the GI Bill to receive an additional bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree to be able to teach. Mick went on to teach Science at Kiser High School in Dayton and to serve as a coach for basketball, baseball, and track. He completed his education career in Dayton as a High School assistant principal, and counselor, then transferred to Fairborn to become a counselor at Park Hills High School. There he coached tennis and golf for multiple years.

Mick and Joan opened the first full-time academic childcare center, Kinderhaus, in Fairborn. Later they would expand to three more centers in the Miami Valley. Mick and Joan were able to retire early so they could travel, play golf, and enjoy their growing family and friends.

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Friday January 9th from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., with a Post Everlasting service at 7:45, in the Belton-Stroup Funeral Home, 422 E. Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd., Fairborn.

The family will hold a private burial with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends Care Community, 150 E. Herman St., Yellow Springs, OH 45387 –or- a charity of the donor’s choice.
