Wilma A. Holmes - age 89 of Laurens, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas, Iowa, due to a short duration of pneumonia with heart complications.

Wilma Alyce Hunt was born to John W. Hunt and Bessie (DeWitt) Hunt on November 12, 1923 in Highbridge, Iowa. She was the youngest of ten children. Wilma’s father was a coal miner and they lived in many coal camps throughout central Iowa. She married Eldon (Bud) Holmes in Boone, Iowa on February 6, 1941. While Bud was away at war Wilma worked at a munitions plant in Des Moines, riding the train with her sister every day from Slater. When Bud returned home from the service they made their home in Slater, Iowa and Backus, MN before moving to Laurens in August of 1951. They moved with their two daughters, Patty and Mary.

Wilma spent most of her adult life as a homemaker. She loved to bake, make candy, sew, do embroidery and crochet. Wilma loved being a grandmother and as the grandchildren can attest: “we loved Grandma’s soft shoulder!”. After retirement she and Bud enjoyed spending their summer months in Backus renewing old friendships; however, they were always anxious to return to Laurens and their many friends here. She also enjoyed watching Minnesota Twins baseball, college football and college basketball.

Wilma was a member of the United Methodist Church and a former member of Easter Star. Those left to love and remember her are her daughters, Patty Steinberg of Rock Port, MO, Mary and John Steinkamp of Spirit Lake, IA., grandchildren Sharai and Marc Koons of St Louis, MO, Amy and Todd Maschino of Laurens, IA, Sarah and Greg Villegas of Sac City, IA, Holly and Don Long of Merrillville, IN, and Tom and Carrie Hemminger of McAllen, TX, and seven great grandchildren.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years; sisters, Goldie, Katherine, Opal, Hazel, Helen and Dorothy and brothers, Lester, Warren and Wallace.
