27th. Reg., Del. Vols.
"After distinguishing himself at the battles of Gaines Mill, Savage's Station, Peach Orchard, White Oak, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Auburn Hill, Bristoe Station, Mine Run, and Wilderness, he fell in the pride of early manhood May 10, 1864 at the battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Va.
In the 27th. year of his age." (From tombstone)

"John was with Co. A, 2nd Delaware Volunteer Infantry. If you look closely on the grave marker you can see that it says 2nd. This is borne out by info in his widow's pension application.
