Mr. Russell J. Ward Jr., age 69, of Quincy, IL formerly of Canton, MO died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at his home in Quincy.

Russ was born in Wisconsin a son of Russell J. and Ethel Andersen Ward Sr. He married Sherry Alberty in Canton on June 8, 1968. She survives.

He was a graduate of Arlington Heights High School in Arlington Heights, IL in 1963 and Culver Stockton College in Canton in 1967 where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He taught and coached at Elsberry High School from 1967-1970. He then taught and coached at Brussels High School from 1970-1984 where he took his Raiders Basketball team to the Illinois Sweet 16. He was chosen as the Illinois Class A Basketball Coach of the year in 1983. The family moved to Canton, MO in 1984 where he became an American Family Insurance Agent retiring in 2007. He and Sherry moved to Quincy in November 2007. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and of Cedar Crest Country Club. Russ was an avid golfer and huge Cubs Fan. He was of the Christian Faith.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry of Quincy; son, Matt (Sheri) Ward of St. Peters, MO; daughter, Robin (Derek) Banta of Quincy; sisters, E.J. Nowak of McKinney, TX and Barb Dittman of Dallas, TX; grandson, Tyler Banta of Quincy; granddaughters, Alaina and Kinley Ward of St. Peters; brother in laws, Bill (Joyce) Alberty of Edina and Marty (Lynda) Alberty of Canton; nieces and nephews, Wade and Anne Alberty, Philip Alberty, Todd and Eric Nowak and Cindy and David Dittman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father and mother in law Edwin (Epp) and Elizabeth Alberty and brother in law Ken Nowak.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Ron Fritts officiating with words of comfort by Bill Alberty. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton. Visitation will be held Friday, January 9, 2015 from 4 until 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton. The family suggests memorials be made to Culver Stockton College Athletic Dept. for the Golf Program or to the charity of the Donor's Choice.
