Reverend Reuben Coffey was a Baptist minister in North Carolina at the Yadkin Baptist Church, Globe Mountain Church and other churches in Wilkes and Burke Counties. In 1832 he moved by covered wagon to Indiana with his wife and ten children. They settled in Owen County where he was pastor of the Bethel Church and had a missionary appointment to the White River Valley. He was among a group of Baptists who founded Franklin College in Franklin Indiana. Originally called The Baptist Manual Labor Institute it was the first college in the state of Indiana to admit women.

Reuben Coffey died the day before his brother Lewis.
