Dennis F. Gross, 66, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 7, 2015. He was born to Jasper and Dorothy Gross in 1949 in Marshall County, MS, and grew up in Olive Branch. He lived and raised his family in Memphis, TN.

Dennis was a veteran of the Vietnam War and proudly served for two years in the United States Marine Corps, ultimately at the rank of Corporal. He was trained in communications and cryptography and was stationed in California and at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. He was honored to show his family around D.C. on one of their many “historical” vacations.

After his service in the USMC, Dennis dedicated the next 37 years of his life to Methodist Healthcare in Memphis as their Director of IT Services and retired in 2007. Methodist held a special place in his heart, as all three of his children were born there. He technically never missed a day of work during their births.

Dennis was married to Cathy Ward Gross for 44 years. He asked her to marry him the first time they met at a party. Cathy declined the proposal at that time, but Dennis, undeterred, negotiated a dance from her instead. They were married in 1971 and had three amazing children: Wendy Gross and Daniel Gross of Memphis, Tennessee and Cory Gross Aven of Mobile, Alabama. His happiest day was walking Cory down the aisle and welcoming Allen Aven and his daughter Kayla into the family. His saddest day is when they informed him they were moving to ALABAMA!

Dennis had a list of positive qualities a mile long. His most redeeming were Accuracy, Loyalty, and Humility. He was always Truthful, Competitive, Dependable and Hard-working. Last but not least, he had a great head of hair and could grow a full beard in 2 days. His son inherited all of these qualities and one better – Daniel’s jokes are funny!
Dennis was a passionate reader. He always had a minimum of four books which he kept strategically positioned in various rooms around the house, that is until he received a “Nook” e-reader and it never left his side. His other passion was, is, and will always be Ole Miss. He never attended the University but rarely missed a football game. Each of his children fondly remembers the first time they went to Oxford and he said, “Welcome to The Grove”, even Wendy with a degree from Mississippi State.

He had a large family and was always surrounded by love and noise! In life, Dennis had three brothers, six sisters, two brother-in-laws, 28 nieces and nephews and too many great-nieces and nephews to count, but if you asked, he could name them all. Last but not least, he had many adopted grandchildren that lovingly called his “Pops”. They all knew where to go for candy money!

The family requests donations to the “No Greater Joy” fund at Highpoint Church, Memphis in lieu of flowers.
